Canada, India launch trade talks as Modi–Carney meeting resets ties

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) framework will be expansive, covering goods, services, investment, agriculture and agri-food, digital trade, mobility, and sustainable development.

India and Canada moved to reset a frayed relationship on Nov. 23 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to launch negotiations for a sweeping trade pact and expand diplomatic staffing, using the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg to signal a new phase of engagement.

The two leaders “welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral relations” since their last meeting in June at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis and the “new roadmap for bilateral engagement” released by their Canadian foreign ministers in October.
