A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, he has been active in the AMA since his residency and has held multiple national leadership roles, including serving on the AMA Council on Science and Public Health and chairing it from 2016 to 2017.
He also served for more than a decade in the AMA House of Delegates and received the AMA Foundation’s “Excellence in Medicine” Leadership Award.
At the state level, Mukkamala has served as president and board chair of the Michigan State Medical Society and as president of the Genesee County Medical Society, where he continues to serve on the board.

At the national level, he has chaired the AMA’s Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force, contributing to policy efforts addressing the opioid overdose epidemic.
Mukkamala has also held civic and philanthropic roles, including serving on the board of the Foundation for Flint and as a trustee of the C.S. Mott Foundation.
Born to Indian immigrant physicians, he has cited his upbringing and his hometown of Flint as central to his career in medicine and public service. He returned to the city after completing his residency at Loyola University Medical Center in 2000 and continues to practice there alongside his wife, Nita Kulkarni, an obstetrician-gynecologist.
The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at the Breslin Student Events Center.
