The White House confirmed Aug.19 that President Donald Trump has secured an agreement in principle from Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, setting the stage for what officials hope will be a decisive step toward ending the three-and-a-half-year-old war.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitte told reporters that Trump spoke with Putin by phone on Aug.18 evening, following a weekend of high-stakes diplomacy that saw the Russian leader visit the United States for the first time in nearly a decade. “Both leaders have expressed a willingness to sit down with each other,” Leavitte said. “Our national security team will help both countries do that.”
