The hosts, India, and defending champions, Germany, could not have asked for more in the FIH Hockey World Cup for Junior Men in Tamil Nadu on the second day of the 14-day extravaganza, featuring 24 teams.
While India made mincemeat of debutants and last-minute entrants, Oman won 17-0, and Germany outplayed Canada 7-0 for their second successive win from as many matches.
While differences in the style and strength of play of competing teams were obvious, the scorelines corroborated that some of the lower-ranked teams still have a long way to go to reach the level of teams required to play in the prestigious events like the World Cup or the Olympic Games.

Going by the results of the first two days, 122 goals have been scored in 16 games decided so far, averaging more than seven goals a match. This ratio is much higher than 5 goals a match in the previous 13 editions of the World Cup. Until the start of the 2025 FIH Hockey World Cup for Junior Men in Tamil Nadu on Nov. 28, 3262 goals were scored in 648 matches.
The International Hockey Federation will have to pay little attention towards lifting the standard of the game in some of the new teams in the competition to make it more spectator-friendly and attractive than witnessing the mauling of weaker teams. Such one-sided encounters do not excite the spectators.
In a game of nearly equals, the Netherlands edged out England 5-3, while in another closely contested game, South Africa earned full points with a 2-1 win over Ireland.
To the great delight of a nearly packed stadium with a home crowd, India went on a scoring spree against Oman. Though the young Oman side tried to put up a fight by putting everything into its game, it was still not able to resist the home team’s onslaught as eight players registered their names on the scoresheet.
Arshdeep (4th, 33rd, and 40th minute), Manmeet Singh (17th, 26th, and 36th minute), Anmol Ekka (29th minute), Dilraj Singh (29th, 32nd, 50th, and 57th minute), Ajeet Yadav (34th and 47th minute), Luwong Ingalemba (43rd minute), Gurjot Singh (39th and 45th minute), and Sharda Nand Tiwari (55th minute) were scorers for India.
With two wins from as many games and 24 goals under its belt, India has moved to the top of the table, while Switzerland, also with two wins from as many games, is placed at number two. Switzerland defeated Chile 3-2 in a close game. Now, Switzerland will play India in its last pool game to decide the pool leader.
Malaysia defeated Austria 5-1 for its first win of the tournament. France launched its campaign with a thunderous 11-1 win over Korea. Another Asian team to start on a disastrous note was Bangladesh, as it went down to Australia 3-5.
