North Carolina State University has appointed Indian-origin academic Rhea Banerjee as assistant teaching professor in counseling and counselor education in its College of Education, effective Aug. 16.
Banerjee currently serves as an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions at Rutgers University.

“I’m excited to join NC State and contribute to a program that values both strong clinical training and culturally responsive practice, while supporting students in becoming thoughtful, effective counselors,” Banerjee said.
Banerjee brings more than a decade of experience in counseling, supervision, teaching and research across clinical, school and community-based settings in the United States and India. She is a National Certified Counselor and Licensed Associate Counselor.
Her teaching practices focus on experiential learning, cultural responsiveness and applying counseling theory to real-world practice.
Banerjee’s research examines culturally responsive counseling practices, with an emphasis on reducing stigma and improving mental health help-seeking among international and immigrant populations.
Her work also explores neuroscience-informed approaches in counseling, including biofeedback and neurofeedback methods, to better understand the relationship between brain function and mental health care.
She is currently co-authoring a textbook on neuroscience-integrated multicultural counseling.
Her work on mental health disparities and counselor training has been recognized with honors including the Ralph N. and Patricia P. Pacinelli Graduate Award. Banerjee has also presented her research at national and international conferences and published on topics including syndemic theory, rehabilitation and neuroscience in counselor education.
Banerjee earned a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision and a Master of Education in counselor education from Pennsylvania State University. She also holds a master’s degree in applied psychology from Women's Christian College, affiliated with the University of Madras. She completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Madras.
