Cookbook author, food writer and video host Priya Krishna will share her experiences in a wide-ranging discussion at the Knafel Center at Harvard-Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study on April 16.
In a conversation with Durba Mitra, a Richard B. Wolf associate professor in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University, Krishna will explore how food and food writing can provide a revealing lens into broader issues of culture and representation.
Krishna and Mitra will also discuss how food offers inspiration, insight and opportunity.
Krishna is a Dallas native living in Brooklyn. A regular contributor to Bon Appétit and The New York Times, Krishna noted that her cooking has been shaped by observing her mother. She added that her mother’s cooking, which consists of “unfussy hybridized Indian dishes,” is what shaped her outlook toward food.
She is the author of multiple cookbooks, including Indian-ish and Priya’s Kitchen Adventure', and has even appeared as a judge on MasterChef.
The organizers of the Knafel Center discussion highlighted that the event coincides with a new exhibition in the Schlesinger Library, 'Cooking Up Change: Women’s Agency and Community Building Through Cookbooks'.

This exhibition will showcase selections from the library’s renowned collection of cookbooks, which include the papers of Julia Child, Zarela Martinez, Grace Zia Chu, and Rosalyn and W. Paul Coates, as well as Madhur Jaffrey.
The discussion with Krishna is part of the Kim and Judy Davis Dean’s Lecture Series.
This annual lecture series invites leading figures from across the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences to share their expertise, ideas and diverse perspectives with the Harvard community and the broader public.
