Indian-origin ophthalmologist SriniVas Sadda named chair of Duke department

SriniVas Sadda, an Indian-origin ophthalmologist and researcher known for his work in retinal imaging, has been appointed chair of Duke Health's Department of Ophthalmology, effective Nov. 10.

Sadda currently serves as the A. Ray Irvine, Jr., MD Endowed Chair in Clinical Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Institute and professor of ophthalmology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Over the course of his career, Sadda has focused on the development and application of advanced retinal imaging technologies, automated image analysis, and data-driven approaches to diagnosing and monitoring eye diseases. His work has contributed to research on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal disorders.

He completed his medical degree, residency, and fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University's Wilmer Eye Institute, where he specialized in neuro-ophthalmology and medical retina. He later joined the Doheny Eye Institute, where he held a range of clinical, research, and leadership positions.

In addition to his academic work, Sadda has played an active role in several professional organizations. He previously served as president of the Doheny Eye Institute and as president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), one of the world's largest organizations dedicated to vision research.

He has authored hundreds of scientific publications and has served on the editorial boards of leading ophthalmology journals. He is also associated with educational initiatives aimed at advancing research and clinical practice in retinal disease.

Throughout his career, Sadda has received recognition from major ophthalmology organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Retina Society, and the Macula Society. His honors include the Research to Prevent Blindness Physician-Scientist Award and the John H. Zumberge Research and Innovation Award.

At Duke, Sadda will oversee the department's clinical, research, and educational activities. The Department of Ophthalmology is involved in patient care, physician training, and vision science research and is part of Duke Health's broader academic medical system.

His appointment marks the next chapter in a career that has spanned clinical practice, scientific research, and leadership in ophthalmology, with a particular focus on advancing the use of imaging technologies in eye care.
