California State Polytechnic University, Pomona has appointed Indian-origin academic administrator Pia Gupta as the new associate dean of undergraduate student success for the College of Business Administration (CBA).
In her new role, Gupta will lead initiatives to enhance academic performance, streamline student support services, promote experiential learning, and implement best practices that improve retention, engagement, and overall undergraduate student success, the university said in a statement.

Announcing the appointment, CBA dean Sandeep Krishnamurthy said, “This marks the beginning of a new chapter for the college — one focused on empowering our students to connect with prosperous economic futures through purposeful, student-focused support. As associate dean, Gupta will lead initiatives that strengthen student success and enhance academic outcomes across our programs.”
Gupta brings more than two decades of leadership in higher education. She most recently served as professor and chair of the Department of Finance at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where she expanded academic offerings, improved student engagement, and led key faculty recruitment and retention efforts since 2019.
A strong advocate for student-centered innovation, Gupta has played leading roles in graduation initiatives, academic advising reforms, and early alert systems that directly improved student outcomes. She was also a key contributor to three successful AACSB re-accreditation cycles at CSULB, demonstrating her expertise in strategic planning and academic quality assurance.
Committed to experiential learning, she co-founded the CSULB Finance Symposium—now a statewide networking platform—and helped establish the university’s STEM-designated Master of Financial Analytics program.
Her academic research, published in journals including the Journal of Corporate Finance and Managerial Finance, explores corporate governance, financial markets, and pedagogy. She has also served as president of the Western Decision Sciences Institute and supported global education initiatives through nonprofit leadership.
“I’m thrilled by the opportunity to join Cal Poly Pomona, where the energy of amazing students, the hands-on Polytechnic "learn by doing" model, industry connections and the caliber of distinguished faculty create an ideal environment for innovation and impact. As Associate Dean for Student Success, I see my role as a collaborative and student-centered leader who brings national best practices to our shared work — partnering with faculty, staff, and students to cultivate a culture of excellence and inclusion,” Gupta said.
Gupta earned her PhD from the University of Texas San Antonio.
