Indian American public health researcher and physician Anushree Vichare has been named interim director of the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at George Washington University, effective July 1.
Vichare, an associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, will succeed Dr. Patricia Pittman, who is retiring after co-founding the institute with Fitzhugh Mullan 11 years ago and serving as its director since 2020.

The appointment comes as the institute continues its work on healthcare workforce equity, including research focused on access to care for Medicaid beneficiaries and underserved communities.
“Anushree has been an integral part of the leadership team, has a deep commitment to our mission and work and, importantly, is adored by everyone who has the chance to work with her,” Pittman said in a statement.
Vichare’s research examines how Medicaid policies affect healthcare access, utilization and health outcomes among low-income populations, with a particular focus on the role of the health workforce. She is also a primary care physician and has worked on projects related to cancer care, maternal healthcare and workforce diversity.
At the Mullan Institute, Vichare serves as an investigator on several externally funded projects studying how the composition, diversity and distribution of the healthcare workforce affect quality of care and access for Medicaid beneficiaries.
Recent projects have explored patient-clinician concordance in primary care utilization and the workforce serving Medicaid patients diagnosed with cancer.
She also co-leads the Health Workforce Diversity Initiative housed within the Social Mission Alliance at the institute.
Before joining George Washington University, Vichare worked at the American Gastroenterological Association as director of quality improvement, where she developed clinical performance metrics and quality measures related to colonoscopy care.
Vichare earned her PhD in Healthcare Policy and Research from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2017. She also holds a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MBBS degree from MGM Medical College in India.
