George Washington (GW) University launched its annual South Asian Heritage Celebration recently with a monthlong series of student-led events.
Held under the theme “Unraveling the Past: Weaving What’s Next,” the March program highlights the histories, traditions, and contributions of South Asian communities.

The celebration is co-chaired by senior Maansi Chandra and second-year student Saanvi Padaki, who are leading efforts to engage the broader campus community. Programming ranges from cultural panels to festive events and performances across the month.
Some of the scheduled events include: Joint Sikh and Hindu Students Associations discussion on Holi and Holla Mohalla on March 4 at 7:30 PM; Muslim Students Association’s Night in Asia Iftar on March 16 after sunset; Asian American Students Association film screening on March 18; Hindu Students Association’s Rang Ki Raat on March 20; Hindu Students Association’s Holi celebration on March 21; Asian American Students Association South Asian Business Crawl on March 22; and Indian Students Association’s South Indian Cultural Night on March 27.
Chandra, a public health major and South Asian Society member, said the event’s significance lies in its ability to challenge stereotypes about the South Asian community. “When you see stereotypes about us, it's heartbreaking; it really affects people. You try to just laugh it off, but it's not actually funny. So it’s important to bring these things to the surface, to talk about them, and to build new stories together as a community,” she told the university press.
Echoing the sentiment, Padaki, a student at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, emphasized the breadth of experiences within the community. “There's so much more to South Asian culture than being a doctor or working in IT. South Asian culture is not a monolith, and this month is a great way to show that.”
All events are open to the campus community; organizers said details for several events are still being finalized, adding that updates will be shared through the respective groups’ Instagram accounts.
