After the Congresswoman deleted X post misidentifying Giani Surinder Singh as a Muslim, civil rights groups and lawmakers criticised her for religiously offensive and inaccurate remarks.

The Sikh Coalition has called for an apology from Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) following a now-deleted social media post in which she expressed outrage over a Sikh man delivering the opening prayer in the U.S. House of Representatives. She also misidentified him as Muslim.

“It’s deeply troubling that a Muslim was allowed to lead prayer in the House of Representatives this morning. This should never have been allowed to happen,” Miller wrote in the June 6 post on X. “America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further from it. May God have mercy!”
