Indian-origin women named among WEF's Young Global Leaders

The newly elected young leaders were chosen as a token to celebrate change makers.


The World Economic Forum's 2023 cohort of Young Global leaders (YGL), includes British-Indian Fagun Thakrar and Indian American Roopa Dhatt. The group consists of the world's most impactful and promising leaders, who tackle the most important issues facing the globe and foster innovation for positive change in civil society, the arts, culture, government, and business, under the age of 40.

Fagun Thakar, a renowned British-Indian actor, writer, director, founder, CEO, social entrepreneur, and international ambassador, has appeared in various Hollywood and international films alongside Academy Award winners.  She currently serves as the CEO of Purpose Cinema Studio, which specializes in producing socially conscious content and tackling pressing issues that engage and inform her audience.

The humanitarian took to her social media and said, "It is such a privilege and a great honor to be selected by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader of 2023. Joining brilliant minds and extraordinary leaders from around the world. Very humbled by this. I look forward to driving greater positive change around the globe. Thank you WEF and YGL."

Indian American Dr. Roopa Dhatt, executive director, Women in Global Health, is a fierce proponent of gender equality in global health and a prominent figure in the push to address the gender gap in leadership positions in the field Based in Washington, D.C. Dhatt is especially dedicated to addressing the power, privilege, and intersectionality challenges that prevent many women from holding leadership positions in the field of global health and to creating spaces where women's perspectives can be heard.

Dhatt co-founded Women in Global Health in 2015 with the goal of transforming the opportunities available to women in leadership roles in the health sector. She was acknowledged in the 2019 Gender Equality Top 100 list of the most significant figures in world politics.

During a personal visit to Pakistan, Jasdeep Singh Jesse, chairman of Sikhs of America and a prominent U.S.–based Sikh community leader, met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif along with his business partner Sajid Tarar.

Although the visit was not official in nature, the meeting provided an opportunity for an informal exchange of views on issues related to the Sikh community’s historical ties to Pakistan and the significance of Sikh heritage sites located in the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed both visitors and acknowledged the longstanding cultural and religious connections that Sikhs across the world share with Pakistan, particularly in relation to sacred places such as Nankana Sahib and Kartarpur Sahib.

Jesse and Tarar expressed appreciation for the maintenance and accessibility of these sites, emphasizing that they hold deep spiritual importance for the global Sikh community.

During the conversation, Jesse conveyed that members of the Sikh diaspora regularly visit Pakistan for religious and personal reasons, and he noted that such visits contribute to people-to-people understanding. The discussion also touched upon the experiences of international visitors, the role of local authorities in facilitating travel to major gurdwaras, and the importance of ensuring continued preservation of Sikh religious landmarks.

Although no formal agenda or policy matters were part of the meeting, both sides regarded the interaction as warm and respectful. Jesse thanked the Prime Minister for the hospitality extended during the visit, while the Prime Minister expressed hope that individuals of all faiths continue to feel welcome when visiting Pakistan’s historic religious sites.
