Kamal Khera to join Canadian diplomatic corps
The move is being seen as an attempt to deepen Canada-U.S. ties that have been under continuous pressure following the start of the tariff war.

In a dramatic move, Ottawa decided to shift four of its consuls general to the United States. The move is being seen as an attempt to deepen Canada-U.S. ties that have been under continuous pressure following the start of the tariff war.
Anita Anand, minister of foreign affairs, ordered a major reshuffle while announcing the appointment of new consuls general in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and Chicago.
Among those appointed is her former Cabinet colleague Kamal Khera, who once held the health portfolio in the Liberal government. Kamal Khera during her tenure as an MP served in various positions in the Liberal government, including member of Parliament, parliamentary secretary, health and federal health minister.
She lost the last federal election.

She took to her social media handles and said that she is “deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Canada in this new role.
“At a time when the Canada-U.S. relationship is more important than ever, I look forward to working with Ambassador Wiseman and Team Canada to strengthen the ties that bring our countries closer together,” she said, adding that she would work to create new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses and help build a stronger future for people on both sides of the border.
The Los Angeles consul general serves as Canada's senior representative in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada, promoting trade and investment, supporting bilateral relations, besides providing consular services to Canadians.
Anita Anand announced the following appointments on Tuesday:
Andrea Clements will be the new consul general in Detroit. She will replace Colin Bird.
Kamal Khera will be the consul general in Los Angeles. She comes in place of Zaib Shaikh and interim Consul Sylvie Bedard. Kamal Khera will take up her appointment in the coming weeks.
Claire Kennedy will become consul general in Chicago, replacing Madeleine Féquière.
Susannah Pierce has been appointed consul general in New York to replace Tom Clark.
