US President Donald Trump’s trade advisor, Peter Navarro, faced public criticism on Sept. 8 after social media platform X flagged his posts alleging Indian interference in American discourse.
Navarro accused “Indian special interests” of manipulating content and spreading propaganda, after his post on India profiteering from its purchases of Russian oil, were fact -checked by X and flagged as false information.

However, X’s Community Notes flagged his claims as misleading and clarified that fact-checks on X were conducted through a global crowdsourcing process and were not influenced by any foreign actors.
In response, Navarro accused X of being manipulated to spread propaganda and launched a poll to determine whether such community posts should be allowed on the social media platform. After 74 percent users voted yes, Navarro tweeted, “India has largest population in the world & all it can do is manage few hundred thousand X propagandists to jerk around a poll? Too funny. America: look at how foreign interests use our social media to advance their agenda.”

He also criticized X founder Elon Musk for allegedly allowing propaganda concerning India, tweeting: “Wow. @elonmusk is letting propaganda into people's posts. That crap note below is just that. Crap. India buys Russia oil solely to profiteer. It didn't buy any before Russia invaded Ukraine. Indian govt spin machine moving high tilt. Stop killing Ukrainians. Stop taking American jobs.”
Musk defended X’s fact-checking system, stating that users determine narratives and that Community Notes provides corrective context for all content. “On this platform, the people decide the narrative. You hear all sides of an argument. Community Notes corrects everyone, no exceptions. Notes, data & code is public source. Grok provides further fact-checking,” Musk said.
Navarro’s latest remarks follow Trump’s imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian imports. Despite Trump later describing India as a “special partner” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “friend,” Navarro has maintained a combative tone, calling India a “laundromat for the Kremlin” and even accusing “Brahmins” of profiteering from oil trade — a comment India’s foreign ministry dismissed as “inaccurate.’”
