The Indian Embassy in Mexico has urged Indian nationals to avoid areas of law enforcement activity and shelter in place, in an advisory issued Feb. 22.
The warning comes amid rising tensions following the killing of drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” in a military raid on Feb. 22. His death has reportedly triggered retaliatory violence in several parts of the country.

The military action is widely seen as President Claudia Sheinbaum’s response to mounting pressure from Washington to intensify operations against drug cartels accused of producing and smuggling drugs, particularly the synthetic opioid fentanyl, into the U.S.
In its statement, the embassy said: “There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity. Indian nationals in Jalisco state (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas state (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), parts of Michoacan state, Guerrero state and Nuevo Leon state should shelter in place until further notice.”
The advisory also recommended that Indian nationals in affected areas avoid locations near law enforcement activity, remain aware of their surroundings, limit unnecessary movement, monitor local media for updates and follow instructions from local authorities.
It advised calling 911 in case of emergency, avoiding crowds and keeping family and friends informed of their location and well-being through phone calls, texts or social media.
