Diaspora conference held at University of Hyderabad

The international meet examined identity, migration and transnational ties among Indian diaspora communities worldwide.

An international conference on the Indian diaspora and questions of identity in transnational contexts was held at the University of Hyderabad on Jan. 23, according to a report by the University of Hyderabad Herald.

The event, titled ‘International Conference on Indian Diaspora: Issues of Identity in the Transnational Context,’ was organized by the Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora at the University of Hyderabad. The inaugural session was chaired by Prof. K. Suneetha Rani, dean of the School of Social Sciences.

Prof. Ajaya K. Sahoo, head of the Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora and the conference coordinator, outlined the conference theme and objectives. The chief guest, Prof. Chandrashekhar Bhat, founder and former director of the centre, delivered remarks during the opening session.

A key feature of the inaugural program was the release of the Routledge Handbook of Asian Diaspora & Nationalism (2026), edited by Prof. Sahoo. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Binod Khadria of Jawaharlal Nehru University, who spoke on contemporary issues in migration and diaspora studies, the University of Hyderabad Herald reported.

Academic discussions continued across two subsequent sessions. Session II, chaired by Prof. Aparna Rayaprol, included presentations addressing cinema, gendered labor, language preservation, diasporic memory, and identity negotiations among Telugu and Punjabi migrant communities. Speakers included Prof. Ridhima Tewari, Prof. Sundari Anitha, Dr. Shazia Khan, Ms. Biba Babu, Dr. Trilok Chandan Goud and Mr. Akash Bhati.

Session III, chaired by Prof. Suchandra Ghosh, focused on transnational networks, nationalism, digital diasporas, return migration, Gulf migration and changing forms of diaspora engagement. Presenters included Prof. Angshuman Kar, Prof. Rudra Pradhan, Dr. Anindita Shome, Mr. Mukul Bhagat, Ms. Hidha Moosa and Mr. Podishetti Naresh.

The conference concluded with a valedictory session led by Prof. Anisur Rahman, who reflected on the discussions and emphasized the role of interdisciplinary research in the study of Indian diasporas, according to the report.
