India on Oct. 6 reaffirmed its global leadership in advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda as the United Nations Security Council marked 25 years of Resolution 1325 — even as UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other speakers warned that women continue to face violence and exclusion across conflict zones.
Addressing the day-long debate, India’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said the milestone “celebrates not merely an anniversary, but a transformative moment that fundamentally reshaped our understanding of peace and security.” He emphasised that India’s commitment to the inclusion of women in peacekeeping “predates the resolution by decades,” citing the deployment of women medical officers to the Congo in the 1960s as “a practical acknowledgement that women’s perspectives, skills and presence are essential to effective peacekeeping.”
