Previously, Shukla served as the endowed chair and director of minimally invasive surgery and co-director of the Bladder Exstrophy Program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he worked for 17 years. He also held an appointment as professor of surgery in urology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Shukla’s clinical and research work has focused on robot-assisted laparoscopy and complex urinary tract reconstruction. He was among the early pediatric urologists trained in robotic surgery in 2004 and has since performed a large number of robotic procedures for children across age groups.
He is also known for his work in the treatment of bladder exstrophy, a rare congenital condition in which the bladder develops outside the body. He has completed more than 250 reconstructive cases involving the condition as part of multidisciplinary teams working across two continents.
His expertise also includes the repair of hypospadias, disorders of sexual development, cloacal malformation, and complications linked to posterior urethral valves and neurogenic bladder.
In addition to his clinical work, Shukla has held leadership roles in institutional and international collaborations. At the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), he served as medical director for strategic alliances, providing medical leadership in planning and assessing health system partnerships aimed at improving care at affiliate sites.
He also worked as a physician lead for CHOP Global Medicine, where he helped develop partnerships and collaborations intended to expand access to pediatric healthcare services in South Asia and the Gulf region.
Shukla has also been active in advancing pediatric urology in India. In 2009, he initiated a surgical workshop at Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, which has since developed into what has been described as an international model of Indo-U.S. academic collaboration.
The collaboration contributed to the creation of an international Center of Excellence in Ahmedabad, which now serves as a referral destination for patients from across South Asia and Africa.
Outside clinical medicine, Shukla is also a co-founder of the Hindu American Foundation and previously contributed to The Washington Post’s On Faith section.
He completed his residency in general surgery and urology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and his fellowship in pediatric urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
