Two Indian restaurants feature in 2024 world's best restaurants list

Two Indian restaurants, Masque in Mumbai and Indian Accent in New Delhi, have made it to the list.

The World's 50 Best Restaurants, a global ranking by William Reed media company, recently unveiled its extended list for 2024, covering restaurants ranked from 51 to 100. Two Indian restaurants, Masque in Mumbai and Indian Accent in New Delhi, have made it to the list.

Masque, Mumbai

Masque, ranked 78th, is helmed by restaurateur Aditi Dugar (director and founder) and head chef Varun Totlani. The restaurant emerged as India's best for 2023 and 2024 according to Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list. 

The World's 50 Best described Masque as "arguably India's most forward-thinking restaurant," noting its focus on showcasing the country's produce through a 10-course tasting menu served in a former Mumbai textile mill.

After founding chef Prateek Sadhu left in 2022, Varun Totlani, a Mumbai native who studied at the Culinary Academy of India in Hyderabad and the Culinary Institute of America in New York, took over as head chef. Totlani has been with Masque since its beginning, rising from commis chef to head chef in 2022. Under the leadership of Dugar and Totlani, Masque continues to receive accolades for its innovative approach to Indian cuisine.

Indian Accent, New Delhi

Indian Accent, ranked 89th, re-enters the list this year. Chef Manish Mehrotra, the culinary director, is the driving force behind Indian Accent at The Lodhi, New Delhi. The restaurant was declared the best in India for seven consecutive years from 2015 to 2021 and was ranked 26th in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants for 2024. 

The World's 50 Best calls Indian Accent "a restaurant that continues to raise the bar of Indian contemporary cuisine," praising its combination of creative, modern dishes and warm hospitality. Chef Mehrotra's inventive tasting menus offer unique takes on Indian classics.

Chef Manish Mehrotra,, is known for pioneering inventive Indian cuisine. He was awarded the Best Chef in India by American Express and has been called the most exciting modern Indian chef in the world today.

Indian Accent showcases inventive Indian cuisine by blending traditional flavors with global ingredients and techniques. Chef Mehrotra has designed a contemporary menu that combines fresh seasonal produce and unusual ingredients to excite adventurous diners while satisfying traditional tastes.

The restaurant opened in 2009 in New Delhi, after which it opened a successful outpost in New York in 2016 and in Mumbai  in August 2023 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. 

The restaurant has received numerous awards, including being featured on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list for nine years and TIME Magazine’s 100 Greatest Places in the World. Indian Accent New Delhi was also voted the No. 1 Restaurant in India by Condé Nast Traveller.

The complete list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants for 2024 will be announced at an awards ceremony in Las Vegas on June 5, 2024.
