A new Indian restaurant has opened in downtown New Rochelle, New York, marking the expansion of a family-owned business that has been serving the community for years.
Mona Restaurant, located at 15 Leroy Place, is the latest venture from the team behind Shirley's India, a longtime New Rochelle favorite known for its Indian cuisine.
The new restaurant offers a full-service dining experience centered on authentic Indian flavors while introducing a modern concept in the city's downtown dining district.
New Rochelle Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert welcomed the opening in a social media post, calling Mona Restaurant "another exceptional Indian dining experience" for the city.
"Building on years of serving authentic Indian cuisine, Mona Restaurant offers flavorful dishes, warm hospitality, and a beautiful new space in the heart of downtown," Ramos-Herbert wrote.
She congratulated the owners on the expansion, adding, "It's always wonderful to see local entrepreneurs continue to invest in New Rochelle and contribute to our city's small business community," while encouraging residents to support the new downtown establishment.
The restaurant builds on the legacy of Shirley's India, a family-owned business that has become a staple of New Rochelle's dining scene. It will be led by Andrew Abraham, whose parents founded Shirley's India. He has described the concept as "the son's iteration of Shirley's," reflecting the family's next generation of hospitality.
Shirley's India has earned a reputation for its Indian and Kerala-inspired cuisine and has been recognized as one of the city's established restaurants.
Mona features a 50-seat dining room, a cocktail program and a menu that blends traditional Kerala cuisine with contemporary Indian and global influences.
