India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, P Kumaran, issued his first public message on May 17, highlighting plans to strengthen the India-UK partnership.

The diplomat also expressed excitement to promote International Day of Yoga 2026 as one of his first public assignments across the UK.

In a video statement shared by the High Commission of India, London, Kumaran described it as a “privilege” to assume charge and said the yoga celebrations would help promote the shared values of wellness, harmony and sustainability.

“As I begin this assignment, I am delighted that one of our first major public engagements will be the celebrations of the International Day of Yoga 2026 across the UK,” Kumaran said.

Referring to yoga as “one of India’s most precious gifts to the world,” he said the practice promotes “harmony, balance, mindfulness and well-being,” while reflecting India’s civilizational ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the belief that the world is one family.

Kumaran also highlighted this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” saying it reflects the Indian belief that “individual well-being and the health of our planet are deeply interconnected.”

The High Commissioner said the Indian mission looked forward to working with “friends and partners across the United Kingdom” to make the celebrations “wider, more inclusive and truly memorable.”

Kumaran, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, was appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to the UK in March by the Ministry of External Affairs. He succeeds Vikram Doraiswami, who has been appointed India’s ambassador to China.

Before taking up the London assignment, Kumaran served as Secretary (East) in India’s foreign ministry. During his diplomatic career, he has also served as India’s ambassador to Qatar and high commissioner to Singapore, besides postings in Cairo, Tripoli, Brussels, Islamabad, Washington and Colombo.
