Virginia Senate opens session with Jain prayer

A Jain prayer was delivered during the official invocation at the Virginia Senate by Sushil Jain on the morning of March 6.
The Senate session was presided over by Ghazala Hashmi, who serves as lieutenant governor of Virginia and is the first Indian-origin and Muslim woman to hold the office.

Senator Kannan Srinivasan of Loudoun County sponsored the recognition and welcomed members of the Jain community to the Senate chamber.
During the proceedings, Hashmi and Srinivasan recognized several Jain organizations, including the Jain Society of Northern Virginia, the Jain Society of Central Virginia, and the Shri Digambar Jain Temple of Virginia.

The invocation took place during a time when Jains across the world observe Mahavir Jayanti, which commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavira, celebrating his teachings centered on nonviolence, compassion and truth.
Before the Senate session, community representatives met with Hashmi and Srinivasan at the Virginia State Capitol, reflecting on the growing presence and contributions of the Jain community in the Commonwealth.
The event was coordinated by Northern Virginia community member Vaibhav Jain, who worked with Jain organizations and the offices of the lieutenant governor and the senator to bring it together.
