The University Grants Commission (UGC), the authority that oversees advanced education in India, has officially granted the University of York a license to establish an international campus in Mumbai.
The UGC’s approval follows a high-profile announcement event held in Mumbai last month, attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and University of York vice-chancellor professor Charlie Jeffery.

The new campus, expected to welcome students in 2026, will initially operate from a prime business district in Mumbai and will later expand into a fully developed research-focused facility.
A hallmark of the Mumbai campus will be its emphasis on research-led teaching and industry engagement. Vice-chancellor Jeffery emphasized the university’s intent to align its research strengths with Maharashtra’s development priorities in AI, healthcare, biotechnology, and the creative economy.
In addition to the UGC license, the University of York announced two significant partnerships aimed at deepening its educational and societal impact in India. The first is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Teach For India, which supports grassroots educational development by training fellows to teach in underserved schools.
The second MoU was signed with the newly formed Indian Institute for Creative Technologies (IICT). Under this agreement, York’s CoStar Live Lab will collaborate with IICT to support sectors such as animation, gaming, visual effects, and extended reality—key components of India’s expanding digital and creative economy.
