Mehta joined UTMB in 2020 as a faculty member in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health. He transitioned to the Department of Epidemiology when it was formally established in 2022 under the newly formed School of Public and Population Health.

“One great thing about epidemiology is its community orientation – it recognizes the importance of factors outside of medical care that affect health,” Mehta said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to build our new department and contribute to UTMB’s national recognition in public health.”

An internationally recognized scholar, Mehta’s research centers on the demography and epidemiology of aging populations, particularly trends in health, functional ability, and mortality. Mehta directs the NIA-funded TRENDS network on old-aged dementia and disability sponsored by the University of Michigan with funding from the National Institute on Aging.

He previously was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar at the University of Michigan and has served on the faculties of Emory University and the University of Michigan.

He holds a PhD and MA in demography from the University of Pennsylvania, a MSc from the London School of Economics, and a BA from Oberlin College.
