The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has appointed immunologist Tanya N. Mayadas as chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and inaugural director of the newly established Institute for Immunological Sciences.
As director of the Institute for Immunological Sciences, she will focus on fostering interdisciplinary research to tackle major immune-related challenges, including chronic inflammation, cancer immune evasion, and age-related immune decline. She also plans to enhance training for students and early-career researchers, a university statement said.

Mayadas brings over 30 years of experience in immune system research and academic leadership. She returns to her alma mater after a career at Harvard Medical School, where she served as a tenured professor of pathology and staff scientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
“Mayadas’ deep roots at the University of Rochester and her impressive academic track record will be invaluable as we seek to expand collaborative research initiatives across disciplines. I’m very excited about the future, and Mayadas will help us build on the strength we already have in immunology to create a new Institute with national and international prominence,” said David Linehan, CEO of URMC and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Mayadas is renowned for her work on neutrophil biology, vascular inflammation, and autoimmune disease mechanisms. Her lab’s research on antibody-driven glomerulonephritis and immune cell activation has had wide-reaching impact, particularly in lupus and cancer immunotherapy. She is a recipient of the Lupus Research Alliance Distinguished Innovator Award and has been continuously funded by the NIH for over three decades.
Commenting on her dual roles, Mayadas said, “I am energized by the opportunity to advance immunology at URMC under Dr. Linehan’s commitment and resources to establish a world-class Institute for Immunological Sciences.”
She received her BA in biology (1983) and PhD in biochemistry (1989) from the University of Rochester, followed by a joint postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Tufts University. She succeeds Jacques Robert, who served as interim chair.
