The University College London (UCL) has announced India Excellence Scholarships to enable 100 of India’s brightest students to study at the unversity as well as its first ever summer school for pre-university students in the country.

The scholarships will support students with an outstanding academic record to pursue full-time master’s degree studies at UCL. Scholarships will be available for the 2024-25 academic year, a university release said. The remaining 67 scholarships will be awarded during the following two years.

The UCL India Excellence Scholarships provide a total of £5,000 (about $6,268) to deserving students enrolled in Master's degree programs across all disciplines. In addition, the university has announced its first summer school in India. It will be held at the British School's modern campus in New Delhi and will offer pre-university students an experience similar to that of studying at a top-tier UK institution.

UCL president and provost, Dr Michael Spence, said, “Indian students are vital members of UCL’s global community and we are dedicated to providing more resources and support to help the very best of them share their knowledge and expertise with us in the UK.”

Describing the scholarship programme as a strong base for India-UK relationship deputy high commissioner Christina Scott said, “I’m delighted that many of India’s brightest young people recognise the value of studying at a world-class institution such as UCL. The relationships they’ll build will deepen the links between India and the UK to everyone’s benefit.”

During the first-ever UCL India summer school, which will run from June 10 to 14, 2024, 50 students in grades 10 and 11 will work in small groups under the instruction of five eminent UCL professors. With an interdisciplinary curriculum on offer, the summer school will enable participants to learn more about what it’s like to study at UCL and provide insight into the UK higher education system.

The applications for the scholarships are open now and the deadline for applications will be 5 p.m. UK time, February 29, 2024.  The applications for the UCL India summer school will open on December 1 2023.
