Indian economist Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian has been named a recipient of the 2026 Alumni Awards by the University of Chicago Alumni Association and the University of Chicago Alumni Board.
Subramanian is being recognized for his contributions to economic policy, including his role in shaping India’s COVID-19 economic response and advancing evidence-based approaches to growth, financial stability and institutional reform.

A tenured professor of finance at the Indian School of Business, Subramanian has focused on development in the Global South, with research spanning banking, corporate governance and economic growth.
He served as the 17th Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India from 2018 to 2021, becoming the youngest to hold the position.
During his tenure, he authored three Economic Surveys that shaped policy discourse, including frameworks on ethical wealth creation and a roadmap for India’s growth and post-pandemic recovery driven by public investment.
Subramanian later served as India’s executive director at the International Monetary Fund from November 2022 until May 2025, where he led the fund’s engagement with South Asia during a period of economic stress and advocated for analytical rigor in global policymaking.
He has also been part of key policy and regulatory committees in India, including those of the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Reserve Bank of India, contributing to banking and corporate governance reforms.
His professional experience includes roles at JPMorgan Chase, ICICI Bank and Tata Consultancy Services, and he has served on the boards of Bandhan Bank, the National Institute of Bank Management and the RBI Academy.
In academia, Subramanian taught at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School before joining the Indian School of Business, where he later served as executive director of the Centre for Analytical Finance. He has received teaching recognition, including “Professor of the Year” for the Class of 2019.
Through his academic work, public writing and books, Subramanian has contributed to debates on economic policy, including issues related to financial systems, governance and development.
Subramanian earned his PhD in financial economics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business under the supervision of Luigi Zingales and Raghuram Rajan and received the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Dissertation Fellowship in 2005.
He holds a degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, where he was awarded a gold medal.
The awards recognize accomplished graduates for professional achievement, service to society and contributions to the university community and will be presented during Alumni Weekend from April 30 to May 3.
