The annual TAAL South Asian dance competition will return for its 14th annual edition at the University of Texas at Austin on April 25, 2026, bringing together top collegiate dance teams for one of the most anticipated South Asian cultural events on campus.

Hosted by the university’s Indian Students Association, the competition is set to draw performers and audiences from across the region, showcasing a mix of classical, folk, and contemporary South Asian dance styles.

TAAL has grown into a flagship event at UT Austin, featuring highly choreographed team performances that blend traditional forms such as Bharatanatyam and Bhangra with modern influences like hip-hop and fusion. Each year, participating teams spend months preparing routines that are judged on creativity, synchronization, storytelling, and technical skill, making TAAL both a competitive and celebratory platform.

In the 2025 season, among the seven competing teams, UT Saaya, which is UT’s premier co-ed fusion dance team, bagged first place. Texas Mohini, UT's all-girls fusion dance team known for their unique blend of traditional and western styles, placed second, while Punjaabawockeez, UT's all-male competitive dance team, came third.

Beyond the stage, the event has become a major gathering point for the South Asian student community, reflecting the increasing visibility and cultural presence of the diaspora across campuses.

Savitha Shan, a University of Texas student and an active member of the 2025 TAAL organizing committee, helped shape last year’s event through her involvement in planning and execution. She was fatally shot in Austin on March 1, 2026 in an incident that has deeply impacted the campus community.
