In a statement, Kumar said that although U.S.-India relations have been referred to as "the defining partnership of the 21st Century," they are currently undergoing challenges. “I don’t have to tell you that right now the relationship between the U.S. and India is at a low ebb. But I remain confident it will be restored as the relationship is grounded in people, principles and purpose,” he said.

A seasoned entrepreneur, Kumar currently serves as director of innovation and entrepreneurship at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is the founder of the AI startup The New Frontier Firm. He is also the president of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) New Jersey chapter and a published author. His debut novel, The Girl in Scarlet Hijab, has been shortlisted for the 2025 Delhi Literature Festival Jury Award for Fiction.

Since arriving in the United States in 1991, Kumar has actively promoted dialogue between India and the U.S. through his work in business, media, writing, and public service. He has also contributed to policy discussions in Congress as a member of the Indian American Task Force on Terrorism and Immigration Reform.

The NJ-India Commission, created to promote cultural and economic cooperation between New Jersey and India, plays a key role in fostering bilateral trade, investment and community engagement. Kumar said he intends to contribute actively to advancing those goals.
