The Sikh community of Springfield, Ohio recently participated in the city's memorial day celebration parade. The presence of beautifully decorated Sikh floats in the parade was a key highlight of this year's parade. The floats were decorated with American flags, banners and posters.
UK Member of Parliament Gurinder Singh Josan CBE participated in this year's parade. He praised the Sikh community’s efforts to participate alongside other ethnic and cultural groups in honoring America's fallen heroes.
For the past 26 years, Springfield-based community leader Avtar Singh, his wife Sarabjit Kaur, and family have consistently represented the Sikh community in this parade. Thanks to their yearly efforts, the Sikh Society of Dayton has been able to mobilize growing participation from the community each year, including members from nearby cities like Cincinnati, Columbus, and even from the neighboring state of Indiana.
Sameep Singh Gumtala, Global Convener of the FlyAmritsar Initiative and a regular participant in the parade with his family, noted, “After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Sikhs across the U.S. faced a rise in hate crimes and racial attacks. It became even more important for us to take part in such public events to raise awareness about the Sikh faith and our distinct identity.”

The members of the Sikh community took efforts to ensure the success of the parade. Swarnjit Singh Pannu of Beavercreek and his family distributed water, juice, and soda to thousands of people. Informational brochures were also handed out to help educate Americans about Sikhs and the event’s memorable moments were captured by Sunil Malhi of A&A Photography from Dayton.
Several local Indian restaurants—including Maharaja India, Amar India, Tandoor India, and Jeet India, along with other community members contributed to serving langar to the volunteers.
