Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) introduced a resolution to censure Representative Andy Ogles (TN-05) following what he described as a “hateful, anti-immigrant rant” targeting New York mayoral primary winner Zohran Mamdani.

This comes after Ogles launched repeated attacks on Mamdani, a Ugandan-born U.S. citizen, calling him “Little Muhammad” and describing him as “an antisemitic, socialist, communist.”

Speaking on the House floor on June 26, Thanedar condemned Ogles’ language as “unhinged anti-immigrant racist rant,” and said such bigotry “has no place in America.” He framed his effort as a defense of immigrant contributions to the United States.

“Throughout American history, immigrants of all kinds have made our country great,” he said, citing examples such as Sergey Brin and Madeleine Albright. “I won’t stay silent when immigrants are attacked,” he added.

Ogles further called for Mamdani to be deported and denaturalized, and sent a letter to United States attorney general Pam Bondi urging an investigation into whether Mamdani’s citizenship was obtained through “willful misrepresentation.”

Mamdani, who won the June 25 Democratic primary, is the first South Asian and Muslim candidate to secure a major-party nomination for New York City mayor. He became a U.S. citizen in 2018. Ogles’ attacks reference Mamdani’s past lyrics in support of the Holy Land Foundation, a group later designated a terrorist organization, but critics have dismissed these claims as politically motivated and unsubstantiated.

The episode has drawn strong backlash, with progressive groups calling Ogles’ rhetoric Islamophobic and dangerous. Several Democrats have echoed Thanedar’s call for formal condemnation, while legal experts note that attempts to revoke citizenship based on political speech would face constitutional hurdles.
