Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi held a recognition ceremony in Schaumburg on May 30 to honor four Vietnam War veterans, including one who received the Bronze Star Medal more than 50 years after his heroic service.

During the event, Krishnamoorthi awarded Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Pins to Joseph Leuze, Jon Fisher, and Doug Elwell, acknowledging their service and sacrifice during the Vietnam War. The pins are part of an ongoing initiative by the Congressman's office to honor Vietnam-era veterans who were never formally recognized for their contributions.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Bronze Star Medal to Douglas Beckmann, a constituent who served as a combat medic. Beckmann was recognized for risking his life to provide medical aid to a wounded soldier during a ground operation on Apr. 11, 1970. Though he was awarded the Bronze Star at the time, he never received the physical medal.

Beckmann contacted Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s office for help recovering his military records and medals. After coordinating with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Congressman’s office confirmed Beckmann’s eligibility and secured the medal for presentation.

“These American veterans embody the very best of our nation—serving with courage, humility, and unwavering dedication to a cause greater than themselves,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “By recognizing their service, we reaffirm our solemn duty to honor the legacy of all who have defended our freedoms.”
