Indian American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) is leading calls for reversal of a series of immigration enforcement actions implemented during the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term.

A letter spearheaded by Jayapal, Ranking Member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, and signed by dozens of Democratic lawmakers, criticized the administration’s policies as “cruel, inhumane, and often illegal.”

They alleged violations of constitutional principles including due process and the separation of powers.

The letter highlighted incidents in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have detained U.S. citizens and lawful residents, targeted international students without evidence of criminal activity, and attempted to deport individuals to countries with documented human rights abuses.

“You have repeatedly told the American people that you are focusing your immigration enforcement on the ‘worst of the worst,’” the lawmakers wrote. “Unfortunately, it has become apparent that you have completely misled the American people, instead sweeping up large numbers of people indiscriminately, including U.S. citizens and those with lawful status.”

The letter followed reports that the administration is planning to deport migrants to Libya, despite a federal court order explicitly barring such actions due to severe safety concerns.

Human rights organizations have condemned these plans, citing Libya’s ongoing conflict and widespread abuses, including torture and human trafficking in detention centers. A U.S. District Judge reaffirmed that any deportations to Libya would violate his existing injunction.

“We urgently demand you to immediately reverse course, fully comply with court orders, and work with us to preserve our democracy,” the letter concluded.

Several advocacy organizations, including Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, Human Rights First, the National Immigration Law Center, and OneAmerica have endorsed the demand.
