Magesh Chandramouli, an Indian-American professor at Purdue University Northwest was selected as a U.S. Fulbright Specialist.
Chandramouli, who teaches Computer Graphics Technology in PNW’s College of Technology, will travel in December to Politecnico di Torino, the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy. He will spend three weeks working with faculty and students to strengthen the school’s aerospace engineering curriculum through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and digital twin (DT) simulation methods.

Digital twin technology, which creates a virtual replica of real-world systems, allows real-time simulations used in predictive maintenance, system diagnostics and hands-on training. Chandramouli said the project will advance aerospace education in Italy and enrich his teaching and research in Indiana.
“The opportunity to work with Politecnico di Torino reflects the power of shared research to develop advanced, accessible tools that transform both education and industry. I am looking forward to contributing to the aerospace engineering curriculum through VR and AR technologies and bringing that knowledge back to PNW to benefit my students and my research,” Chandramouli said.
His partnership with Politecnico began through a National Science Foundation-European Research Council grant, where he collaborated with Alfonso Pagani, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. That connection has since grown into a wider exchange between the institutions.
As part of the collaboration, two Politecnico students will spend two months this fall at PNW’s College of Technology conducting research under the supervision of Pagani and Chandramouli.
“These are critical steps in building a mutually beneficial relationship between our institutions. It sets the stage for future collaboration in research, publications and possibly new funding opportunities,” Chandramouli said.
He holds a Ph.D. from Purdue University, M.S. from the University of Calgary, Canada, M.Eng from the National University of Singapore and B.E. from College of Engineering, Guindy, India.
The Fulbright Specialist program, part of the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright initiative, fosters international educational exchange through short-term, project-based appointments.
