Saroj Chand named inaugural Simons Empire Faculty Fellow at SUNY
The fellowship is designed to stimulate early-career faculty hiring across fundamental sciences and engineering.

Dr. Saroj Chand, an Indian-origin scholar and assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB), has been named an inaugural Simons Empire Faculty Fellow by the State University of New York (SUNY) and the Simons Foundation.
The prestigious fellowship, announced by SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., funds top early-career, tenure-track faculty across New York state who are driving breakthroughs in critical scientific fields, including neuroscience, mathematics and physics.
Supported by the Simons Foundation and Simons Foundation International, the Empire Faculty Fellows program selected just 16 researchers across SUNY’s four university centers: Buffalo, Stony Brook, Albany and Binghamton.

The fellowship is designed to stimulate early-career faculty hiring across fundamental sciences and engineering.
Chand’s research focuses on building scalable quantum sensors to improve the performance of quantum devices and discover new materials for advanced technologies.
Speaking on the broader initiative, SUNY Chancellor King said, “Through the work of our world-class faculty, SUNY is at the forefront of research and innovation that is improving lives, investing in our state’s economic growth, and deepening our understanding of the universe.”
The inaugural fellows will continue to drive research for the public good while reinforcing SUNY’s commitment to doubling research throughout the SUNY System, he said.
The Simons Empire Faculty Fellows will build on existing research at SUNY’s university centers in fields including neuroscience, mathematics and physics.
