‘No place for violence’: Indian American Democrats decry WH shooting
Lawmakers condemned political violence, thanked law enforcement, and urged bipartisan efforts to address rising threats.

Indian American Democratic members of Congress have united in condemnation of the shooting incident during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner that took place on April 25. U.S. President Donald Trump and several senior U.S. officials were evacuated from the annual WHCA after multiple gunshots were reported.
Following the incident, Trump shared an update on social media, confirming that the situation had been brought under control and praising the swift response of security agencies. The event was subsequently rescheduled, and Trump later shared that the event would be reorganized within the next 30 days.
Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, who was at the WHCA during the incident, shared his experience and noted, “I was walking down the escalators from the lobby when, at the bottom of the escalators, 2 security people with guns were running through and yelling ‘watch out for crossfire.’ I got behind a pillar with another person, then left out a back exit while hearing more commotion and police.”
He added, “Thank you to Secret Service, Capitol Police, DC Metropolitan Police and all law enforcement for their quick response.”

Congressman Ami Bera remarked, "I am grateful for the swift actions of law enforcement at tonight’s White House Correspondents Dinner and relieved to hear that everyone is safe."
He added, "Tonight was about celebrating the First Amendment and our free press. We can never allow violence or intimidation to infringe upon that fundamental freedom."

Rep. Ro Khanna, on April 26, urged lawmakers to create a bipartisan national commission for political violence following the shooting at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
Within hours of the attack, Khanna took to X and expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and his condemnation of the violence. He said, “I am grateful to law enforcement for protecting everyone at the White House Correspondents Dinner. My thoughts are with the brave Secret Service agent who was shot.”
Khanna continued, “Political violence is completely unacceptable. There is no place for it in our country.”
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal also hailed law enforcement efforts and remarked, “Very grateful to law enforcement for quickly acting to secure the room and save lives at the WHCD.”She added, “Violence is never the answer.”
Congressman Shri Thanedar expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and other security agencies who acted swiftly and added, “I am keeping all those in attendance in my thoughts: political violence is never acceptable.”

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi also came out in condemnation and appealed, “violence must have no place in our democracy.”
Krishnamoorthi continued, “Grateful for the courage of the Secret Service and relieved the injured agent will recover.”
