Three Indian-origin men were jailed on Dec. 19 for their roles in violence that erupted at a 2023 kabaddi tournament in Derby, United Kingdom, which left several people injured.

The large-scale fight involving weapons occurred during the sporting event in Alvaston. Police were called after receiving reports of shots being fired and people fighting with weapons.

Those accused Boota Singh, Damanjit Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh denied the offenses, but following a trial at Derby Crown Court in November, they were found guilty.

According to police evidence presented in court, video footage from the event showed Boota Singh chasing members of the opposing group. While he was not seen carrying a weapon during the violence, officers stopped his car two days later and recovered two machetes from the boot. The same footage showed Damanjit Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh brandishing large knives during the disorder.

Police said the disorder was not spontaneous and followed a pre-arranged meeting by one group in Derby before travelling to the tournament site. Officers described the incident as a serious outbreak of violent disorder that turned a community sporting event into a dangerous scene and required a significant police response.

Boota Singh, 35, of Witham Drive, Derby, was convicted of violent disorder and admitted possession of an offensive weapon at the start of the trial. Damanjit Singh, 35, of Powell Place, Tipton, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of a bladed article and was convicted in his absence.

Rajvinder Takhar Singh, 42, of Patterdale Drive, Huddersfield, was convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.

The three men returned to the same court for sentencing on December 19. Boota Singh was jailed for four years, Damanjit Singh was sentenced to three years and four months in prison in his absence, and Rajvinder Takhar Singh received a prison term of three years and ten months.

Two other men who stood trial for their alleged involvement in the violence were found not guilty by the jury.
