An Indian-origin former KFC employee has won close to $90,178 (£70,000) as compensation for being called a 'slave' by his manager and being forced to work extra hours, reported BBC.

Tamil Nadu native Madhesh Ravichandran started working at a south-east London KFC franchisee in 2023. Two months after starting, Ravichandran applied for leave but his Sri Lankan boss not only denied the request but also referred to Ravichandran as a "slave" and forced him to work extra hours. Ravichandran claimed that the manager also stated that he would prioritize such requests from Sri Lankan employees.

Ravichandran overheard the comments and was left "upset and humiliated", as per the tribunal. Resigning months after the incident, he noted that no real investigation took place after his allegations came to light.

The tribunal noted Ravichandran was wrongfully dismissed and subjected to race discrimination, harassment related to race and victimisation.

Tribunal judge Paul Abbott, apart from awarding the compensation, also recommended Nexus Foods Limited, which operates the West Wickham KFC branch, to sensitivity training programs for its staff.
