GOPIO-Manhattan Officials, Members and Supporters at the Oath Ceremony / GOPIO
The Manhattan chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, or GOPIO-Manhattan, formally inducted its newly elected leadership team during an oath-taking ceremony held May 17 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Manhattan.
The chapter, established in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, recently conducted elections for its Executive Committee and Board of Trustees for the 2026-2027 term.
The ceremony was attended by GOPIO International leaders, members, supporters, community representatives and guests. Among those present were GOPIO International Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, President Prakash Shah and General Secretary Siddarth Jain.
President-elect Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty welcomed attendees and outlined his vision for collaborative and inclusive leadership within the chapter. He then invited Abraham, who chaired the Election Committee, to speak about GOPIO’s history, mission and activities supporting the Indian diaspora.
Abraham discussed the organization’s work connecting Indian diaspora communities globally. Shah later addressed the gathering and spoke about upcoming GOPIO programs, including the GOPIO convention planned in Mumbai. He then administered the oath of office to the newly elected Executive Committee, trustees and board members.
New York Democratic congressional primary candidate Vichal Kumar also addressed the gathering and congratulated the new leadership team. He emphasized the importance of civic engagement and participation in the political process.
The newly elected Executive Committee is headed by Prof. Rajasekhar Vangapaty as president. Other office-bearers include Bhavya Gupta as executive vice president, Dr. Vimal Goyle as vice president, Raj Punjabi as secretary, Braj Aggarwal as treasurer and Gagan Gujral as joint secretary.
The newly elected trustees are Shivender Sofat, Dr. Thomas Abraham, Mukund Mehta, Siddarth Jain, Anil Narang and Neha Motwani.
Appointed board members include Dr. Lisa George, Dr. Arnab Ghosh, Manoj Jareth Asig and Jasvir Ubhi.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Vangapaty thanked the Election Committee, including Abraham, Shivender Sofat and Mukund Mehta, for overseeing what he described as a smooth election process. He also congratulated the newly elected members and reaffirmed his commitment to serving GOPIO-Manhattan and the wider community.
Several attendees offered congratulatory remarks during the event, including GOPIO-Manhattan’s first and immediate past president Shivender Sofat, who joined by telephone, GOPIO life member Mrudul Pathak and Kumar.
The speakers commended GOPIO-Manhattan’s community service initiatives, cultural engagement efforts and leadership development activities.
The event concluded with refreshments and networking among attendees. Vangapaty also thanked Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Executive Director Minesh Patel and the organization’s board for providing the venue for the ceremony.
