Colorado State University named Indian American plant scientist Anireddy Reddy as a Distinguished Professor, the institution’s highest academic honor for tenured faculty.

The appointment was announced March 30 as part of a six-member cohort recognized for achievements in teaching, research and service.

Reddy, a professor in the Department of Biology in CSU’s College of Natural Sciences, joined the university in 1992 and is internationally known for his work in plant molecular genetics.

His research has focused on how plants use cell signaling and gene regulation to respond to environmental and biological stress, with applications in crop improvement and biotechnology.

According to the university, Reddy’s research group has made fundamental discoveries on plant stress responses and has used next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing to study changes in gene regulation under stress conditions.

Nominators said his work “reveals potential solutions to the great challenges facing humanity in energy, food security and biomedicine.”

“Prof. Reddy’s discoveries demonstrate how the availability, abundance and regulation of genetic variation in plants drives their responses to environmental change and opens the door to promising opportunities in biotechnology,” nominators wrote.

They added that his work “promising to alleviate critically limiting global resources and to advance sustainability” has made him “internationally recognized as a scientist of the highest rank.”

Reddy has published more than 210 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, with nearly 20,000 citations, according to the university. His research has also drawn more than $14 million in federal funding.

He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has also been recognized for student mentorship.

Colorado State said the six newly named professors will be recognized at the Celebrate! Colorado State Provost Awards ceremony and luncheon on April 22. The honor is limited to no more than 2 percent of the university’s tenured faculty.
