Worcester appoints Seema Dixit as health commissioner

Dixit joined the Massachusetts city after serving in senior leadership roles at the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The city of Worcester,Massachusetts appointed Indian American public health executive Seema Dixit as its  Commissioner of Health and Human Services.

City Manager Eric D. Batista announced Dixit’s appointment, citing her  extensive experience in public health leadership and government administration.

“Dixit brings a wealth of experience leading public health programs and operations,” Batista said. “She has proven success in managing multimillion-dollar programs, leading interagency partnerships, and advancing policy. I look forward to working together to advance the health and wellbeing of all Worcester residents.”

Dixit joined in the new role after more than 25 years in public health, most recently serving as Deputy Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, the public health agency of the neighboring US state of Rhode Island.

At the Rhode Island Department of Health, Dixit held multiple senior roles after joining the agency in 2003. She served as Deputy Director from 2022 to 2025 and previously led community mitigation and enforcement efforts during the COVID-19 response.

She also served as Director of Environmental Health and Director of Health Care Quality and Licensing, in addition to leading divisions focused on chronic infectious diseases, minority health, primary care, rural health and disability services.

Earlier in her career, Dixit worked with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on obesity prevention. Before moving into US public health leadership, she also held nutrition-related roles in India, including as Human Nutrition Director at the United Soybean Board in New Delhi and as a nutritionist at Sterling Health Care in Mumbai.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed Commissioner of Health and Human Services for the City of Worcester,” Dixit said. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, community partners, and residents to strengthen public health, expand access to essential services, and build equitable health systems as deserved by the community.”

Dixit holds two graduate degrees from Tufts University in the United States–a Master of Science in International Health and Public Policy and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Health Administration.

She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in human nutrition at SNDT Women's University in Mumbai, India.
