Arrest made in Toronto killing of Karnataka native

37-year-old Nandakumar, a Karnataka native, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a busy shopping center in Toronto on Feb. 7.

Toronto police has arrested 19-year-old Isaiah Thomas Badger on March 19 for the homicide of Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakumar.

37-year-old Nandakumar, a Karnataka native, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a busy shopping center in Toronto on Feb. 7. 

Police said officers responded to reports of gunshots and found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Nandakumar was immideately transported to a hospital but he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Nandakumar was originally from Karnataka, India, and had been living in Canada for approximately six years. He worked as an IT professional, according to family members.

According to local reports, his father, Nandan Kumar, who lives in Nelamangala near Bengaluru, had appealed for assistance to repatriate his son’s body and for a thorough investigation into the killing.

Investigators said the shooting was targeted and not a random act. Crime scene evidence showed a white Hyundai SUV with multiple bullet holes in the driver-side windshield, shattered glass, and personal belongings scattered near the vehicle. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots before the suspects fled the area in a vehicle.

Toronto police's Homicide and Missing Persons Unit issued a Canada Wide Warrant for First Degree Murder against the accused, Badger, on Feb. 7, which led to his eventual arrest. 

On Feb. 7, Badger was located by the Calgary Police Fugitive Team and was charged with First Degree Murder after his arrest. 

The multi-department led by the Toronto Police Service was supported by the York Regional Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police E Division and K Division, Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Vancouver Police Service, Abbottsford Police Service, and Surrey Police Service for assisting in the investigation.
