India announces World Yogasana Sports Championship

The competition is being organized by the World Yogasana Body, the global authority on yogasana sport.

India will host the first World Yogasana Sports Championship from June 4 to 8, inviting athletes from around the world to participate.

The championship is an international sports competition where athletes from different countries compete by performing yogasana (yogic postures) and will bring together talent from across the globe.

Scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the competition is being organized by the World Yogasana Body, in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India.

The World Yogasana Body is an international organization dedicated to promoting yogasana as a sport. The body serves as a global authority on yogasana sport, fostering a community of athletes, coaches and enthusiasts through standardization, education and certification.

The competitions will be held in six categories based on age groups and will allow a maximum of one participant per country.

Athletes will compete for prizes in Traditional Yogasana, Forward Bend Individual, Back Bend Individual, Twisting Body Individual, Leg Balance Individual, Hand Balance Individual, Supine Individual, Kalatmak Ekal, Kalatmak Yugal, Talatmak Yugal, Kalatmak Samuha and Traditional Groups.

Winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, along with merit certificates. Additionally, athletes finishing in fourth and fifth positions will receive merit certificates. The best athlete from each country will also be honored.

Countries with the most gold medals in the final tally will be awarded the Champion Trophy, first runner-up trophy and second runner-up trophy. The overall individual champion trophy for men and women separately will be awarded to the athletes winning the highest number of gold medals.

The event was earlier scheduled to be held in November 2025 and has since been rescheduled.

The championship is part of the Government of India’s and the World Yogasana Body’s push to substantially boost yogic traditions and their practice in everyday life. The move aligns with the country’s recent announcement of the Prime Minister’s Awards for Yoga 2026, a national honor recognizing contributions to the promotion and development of yoga worldwide.

Athletes could register for the World Yogasana Sports Championship 2026 until March 20.
