Prada’s Spring/Summer 2026 menswear show has indeed sparked a significant controversy within the Indian diaspora and beyond due to the inclusion of sandals strikingly similar to age-old Indian Kolhapuri chappals without initial acknowledgment.

Prada has since admitted that the “leather sandals” were indeed inspired by Kolhapuri chappals. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, issued a letter acknowledging that the sandals showcased in their Milan show were “inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage.”

He emphasized that the designs are still in the early stages of development and not yet confirmed for production, and that Prada is “committed to responsible design practices, fostering cultural engagement, and opening a dialogue for a meaningful exchange with local Indian artisan communities.”
