Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Key to the City of Buenos Aires by Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government, on July 6 during his official visit to Argentina. The symbolic honour was presented as part of Modi’s five-nation tour across Latin America and Africa.
Modi acknowledged the recognition in a post on social media platform X, writing, “Honoured to receive the Key to the City of Buenos Aires from Mr. Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government of Buenos Aires.”

Earlier in the day, Modi paid tribute to General José de San Martín, a key figure in Argentina’s independence movement. He laid a wreath at the monument in Buenos Aires and later posted, “Paid homage to General José de San Martín in Buenos Aires. His courage and leadership played a pivotal role in Argentina’s history. His life remains a symbol of patriotism and determination for the people of Argentina.”
The Indian Prime Minister also held wide-ranging talks with Argentine President Javier Milei. Both leaders agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in areas such as defence, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, and critical minerals. They also discussed ways to diversify trade between the two countries.
Argentina was the third stop on Modi’s ongoing five-nation tour, which began in Ghana and continued to Trinidad and Tobago. In Port of Spain, he was awarded the Order of the Republic, the highest civilian honour of Trinidad and Tobago.
Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on June 4 evening, where he was welcomed with a ceremonial reception at Ezeiza International Airport. Following his Argentina visit, he has now reached Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is attending the 17th BRICS Summit, marking the fourth leg of his trip. The tour will conclude in Namibia.
