MIT’s Parag Pathak elected to National Academy of Science

He is one of the 150 individuals who received the honor this year.

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has elected Parag Pathak to its fold in recognition of his 'distinguished and continuing achievements in original research'.

This year, 120 members and 30 international members were elected, taking the total membership tally to 2,662, with 556 international members. He is one of the five professors inducted from MIT alone.

The National Academy of Sciences, established in 1863, is a prestigious U.S. organization that provides independent, science-based advice to the nation on critical issues. Consisting of distinguished scientists, it promotes research and addresses global challenges through its reports and initiatives.

Parag Pathak is the Class of 1922 Professor of Economics and a founder and director of MIT’s Blueprint Labs. He joined the MIT faculty in 2008 after completing his PhD in business economics and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in applied mathematics, all at Harvard University.

Pathak is renowned for his contributions to market design and education, significantly influencing student assignment and school choice systems in cities like Boston, New York City, Chicago, and Washington. His recent work focuses on applying market design principles to allocate critical medical resources, while his influential studies explore school quality, charter schools, affirmative action, the impact of foreclosures on housing prices, and the housing market's response to the end of rent control in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He won the 2018 John Bates Clark Medal, given by the American Economic Association to the economist under 40 whose work is judged to have made the most significant contribution to the field for his work in market design.

Pathak is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory. He is also the founding co-director of the market design working group at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a co-founder of Avela Education.
