Indian weightlifter and Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu marked a triumphant return to international competitions on Aug.25, winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad.

The 30-year-old Manipuri athlete, lifted a total of 193 kg, comprising 84 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean and jerk, to claim top honors in women's 48kg podium. In doing so, she broke the Commonwealth records in all three categories: snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift.

This victory comes a year after Chanu narrowly missed a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she finished fourth. Since then, she has battled recurring injuries that sidelined her from several key tournaments.

Chanu has been training under chief national coach Vijay Sharma, who has worked closely with her to perfect a 90 kg snatch, a lift that remains one of her most ambitious targets.

Her career highlights include a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a gold at the 2017 World Championships, and multiple podium finishes at the Commonwealth Games. She first rose to prominence in Glasgow 2014, securing a silver in the 48 kg category.
