Rupinder Ashworth has been appointed as the new independent chair of British Weight Lifting (BWL), becoming the first woman to hold the position in the organization’s history, BWL announced in a statement.
Ashworth, who has been involved with BWL since 2018, will serve a four-year term. Her appointment was confirmed following a recruitment process overseen by the BWL Independent Nominations Committee, with UK Sport’s Interim Chair Rachel Baillache sitting in on the final round of interviews.
"It is a tremendous honour to be appointed as the BWL Independent Chair," Ashworth said. "This is an organisation with proud traditions, ambitious goals, and a passionate community. I look forward to continuing working with the Board, executive team, and wider stakeholders to support the continued growth and success of the sport at all levels."
Ashworth joined the BWL Board as an Independent Director in December 2018 and became Senior Independent Director in July 2024. She brings experience from roles in sports governance, business leadership, and marketing, and is known for her focus on integrity, inclusion, and performance-driven culture.
Her appointment signals a new phase for the national governing body, which oversees Olympic weightlifting and para powerlifting in the UK.
Matthew Curtain, BWL CEO, welcomed the appointment. "We are delighted to welcome Rupinder Ashworth to the role of Independent Chair. Her insight and leadership will be instrumental as we deliver our strategic vision and work to ensure weightlifting and para powerlifting in the UK is strong, inclusive, and future-focussed."
