MI New York won their second Major League Cricket (MLC) title by defeating Washington Freedom by 5 runs in the final at Grand Prairie Stadium on July 13.
Batting first, New York made 180 for 7 in 20 over. Quinton de Kock scored 77 runs and gave the team a strong start along with Monank Patel, who made 28. The team lost quick wickets in the final overs but managed to finish with a competitive total thanks to an unbeaten 22 from Kunwarjeet Singh.
In reply, Washington Freedom started poorly, losing two wickets in the first over to Trent Boult. Rachin Ravindra (70 off 41) and Jack Edwards (33) built a good partnership to bring the team back into the match.
However, after Edwards was dismissed, the scoring slowed down. Glenn Phillips and Glenn Maxwell tried to keep up with the required run rate, but MI New York’s bowlers kept things tight.
Rushil Ugarkar bowled the last over with 12 runs needed and took the key wicket of Maxwell. He finished with 2 for 32 and was named Player of the Match. MI New York’s bowlers held on in the final overs to secure the win.
Mitchell Owen of Washington Freedom was named Player of the Tournament. Monank Patel won the Best Domestic Player award and ended as the top run-scorer. Xavier Bartlett from San Francisco Unicorns took the most wickets in the season. Ugarkar also received the Best U23 Player award.
