Manisha Desai secures $300K grant for SBU AI project

She will lead a multi-year project examining AI’s impact on democracy and academic freedom

Indian American sociologist Manisha Desai has received a $300,000 Mellon Sawyer grant to study how artificial intelligence shapes democracy and academic freedom at Stony Brook University, with the project set to begin with a symposium and extend over multiple years.

Desai, executive director of the Center for Changing Systems of Power and Empowerment Trust Endowed Professor of Global Citizenship, is leading the initiative alongside Michael Rubenstein, Abena Asare and Robert Chase. The grant supports research into the historical and cultural sources of contemporary developments.
